Access to Work Grants

Access to Work is a UK government program designed to support individuals with physical or mental health conditions, including ADHD, to help them start or maintain employment. It can provide funding of up to £62,900 per year to cover practical support, allowing individuals to thrive in their roles by overcoming work-related challenges due to their condition.

For someone with ADHD, Access to Work can cover the cost of ADHD Coaching, a job coach or virtual assistant to assist with time management and prioritising task, or supporting a change in work patterns to accomodate ADHD needs, such as phased work schedules.

Both individuals and organisations (on their behalf) can apply for Access to Work funding.

Visit the Access to Work website.

Apply for Access to Work Funding

Here is a step-by-step guide to applying for Access to Work funding for ADHD coaching (UK only)

Before applying, ensure you meet the basic AtW eligibility criteria:

Health Condition: You must have a physical or mental health condition or disability that affects your ability to work or requires adjustments. (In the case of ADHD, you do not necessarily need to have been formally diagnosed, though you will need to clearly explain the challenges you are facing and how it is impacting your work)
Age: You must be at least 16 years old.
Employment Status: You must be in paid work, self-employed, or have a job offer to start within the next 12 weeks.
Location: You must live and work in England, Scotland, or Wales. (Northern Ireland uses a different system and AtW does not include the Channel Islands or Isle of Man.)
If you meet these requirements, you can proceed with the application.

Although a formal diagnosis isn’t mandatory, it can strengthen your application. Gather the following:

ADHD Diagnosis Documentation (if available): This could be a formal diagnosis or related medical records if you have them.
Job Details: Information about your current job role, tasks and the specific challenges faced by having ADHD.
Employment Letter or Job Offer (if applicable): Proof of employment or an offer of employment, especially if you haven’t yet started the job.

Visit the official Access to Work page on the UK Government website: gov.uk/access-to-work.

  1. Review the available support options on the website
  2. Click on the link to begin your application

Provide the following details in the online form where prompted:

Personal Information: Full name, contact details and National Insurance number.
Employment Information: Job title, hours, employer’s contact details and workplace location.
Details of your condition: Describe how ADHD affects your worrk, being as specific as possible on the particular tasks and challenges.
Support needed: For ADHD coaching, specify that you’re seeking support for “ADHD coaching” and any other accommodations that would help.
It is important to be as specific as possible about how ADHD impacts you at work. This information will be used to assess the support most suited to you.

Having completed the form, submit it online. You may receive a confirmation email or phone call afterwards.

Following the submission of your application:

Contact with an assessor: An assessor will review your application and then contact you to discuss your needs in more detail. This conversation is crucial as it will determine their decision on the form and level of support made available to you.
Workplace Visit: The assessor may request to view your workplace (virtually or in person) and discuss with your employer about any needed adjustments.
Develop a Support Plan: Together with yourself and your the employer, the assessor will create a plan tailored to your needs. This might include:

  • ADHD coaching
  • Flexible working arrangements
  • Additional time to complete specific tasks
  • Mentorship for support at work

Be open and clear about your daily work challenges to ensure the support plan accurately reflects your needs.

Approval: The government will review your support plan based on the assessment for final approval.
Funding Mechanism: Typically your employer will pay for the services upfront and are later reimbursed by Access to Work. I suggest confirming this process with your employer ahead of the application.

It is worth noting here, that like any grant application, the Government will ask for 3+ options and typically will go with the option that offers most value for money. Keep that in mind when you put forward the options of coaches you wish to work with.

Once approved, begin implementing the support plan:
Coordinate with Your Employer: Keeping your employer in the loop, begin scheduling coaching sessions and any additional support tools you require.
Keep Records: Save all receipts and records of expenses if you or your employer pay upfront. These will need for reimbursement.

Access to Work provides support on an ongoing basis, typically up to three years. After this, your needs will be reviewed. They may ask for periodic reviews to check if adjustments to your support plan are necessary as your role or needs change.

– Be clear, detailed and specific: Describe in detail how ADHD affects your performance at work and the daily challenges it presents to you.
– Advocate for your needs: Be honest about the challenges you face and explain the support you require and how it will improve your work performance and productivity.
– Be organised: Keep copies of all application documents, receipts, invoices and correspondence.
– Sprints not marathons: I have broken this process down into small, manageable steps. Nevertheless, asking for help can always feel like a huge step. Keep the steps small, one step at a time. (Techniques such as the Pomodoro technique can help)
- Following these steps will help guide you through the process of applying for Access to Work and securing financial support for ADHD coaching and other reasonable adjustments.
